I read the book, "Chu Ju's House" by Gloria Whelan. I thought it was actually a pretty decent book to read. Around this time frame, China only lets families have two kids per family and they prefer only boys because boys are more useful than girls are they think and that they'll be able to pass on another family better than girls will. But when her mom gets pregnant, the whole family is hoping that it'll be a boy; too bad not all stories have happy endings right? The baby comes out to be a girl unfortunately, and when she finds out that her grandmother is planning to put her baby sister Hua up for sale at an orphanage, she decides to do something about it. She decides to run away so they could try again for a boy and make her family proud, but she also runs away to try and save her sister as well. Just at the age of fifteen is when her journey started. Throughout her entire journey, she goes to various types of places and learns how to do a whole bunch of new things such as making rice and cooking fish, but not only that but meets new people on her way there too.
I would recommend this book who enjoys reading about the law in China and how they would have their families set up. But I would also recommend this to someone who is not looking for humor, but more about solving a problem by going on various types of journeys around China. It starts off kind of slow and goes up in action at times you wouldn't expect it too, but I thought it was one of the best books I've ever read. It's also an easy read so it wouldn't take too long to finish, but it's definitely worth every second!
Pt 1 - You tend to focus on just the beginning when most of the story is about her finding a new life for herself.
ReplyDeletePt 2 - this is far too short here. Should be around 300 words.
